November 2021

November 2021 Newsletter Welcome to the Carney’s Community Newsletter of November 2021.  Over the past couple of months, we have been busy working within the community, to support as many people as possible. We are as ever, very grateful for your continued support, as this has allowed us to both deliver and adapt our services throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Read on to find out what we have been up to… We were presented with an award for our work during the pandemic, by Wandsworth Council and now have our name on the Wandsworth Role of Honour. Summer Appeal

WE NEED YOUR HELP The last year has had a big impact on us all. For young people in general, this crisis has dealt a disproportionate blow, affecting their lives in every way. They have experienced economic and social challenges, struggling to find work and maintain relationships. Not seeing friends has a big impact on young people’s development and many have reported feeling lonely and isolated. The charity Young Minds found that 67% of young people believe that the pandemic will have a long-term negative effect on their mental health. Many are feeling worried about the future. Some feel hopeless. “You guys are always open, when something bad is happening at my house I can talk to you about it.”   For the young people we work with at Carney’s Community, already chaotic lives have suddenly turned upside down. Many of these young people are living with a number of […]

Covid-19 (Coronavirus) Update – 24 July 2020

Many of you will be aware that the restrictions relating to COVID 19 have started to ease. With this in mind, we have been risk assessing all of our activities, in line with information from the National Youth Agency, Government guidance and England Boxing. We have been told that we can open the gym from the 25th July and that we can open the centre to deliver youth work activities. However, there are still stringent requirements around numbers, social distancing, track and trace and PPE, so now is not the time to return to our normal running of sessions. So for this reason we will be bringing our staff back from Furlough on the 3rd August, to ensure we can have some provision over the Summer Holidays. We will be opening the gym on Monday the 27th July, for small group, pre-booked boxing sessions. These will take place in “bubbles” […]

I am sure you will be aware that the Government has recently released it’s COVID-19 recovery strategy, which shows a slight ease of restrictions and a phased loosening of rules around the gradual reopening of education settings, from the 1st June. However, this is still not the case for youth centres, with guidance advising that, by law, they are to remained closed to the public. It also emphasises that these measures are conditional on upcoming trends seen in Covid-19 data. Having said this, we are still striving to […]

Posh Boy doc

Check out @poshboydoc on Instagram for some teaser trailer footage of a film that they are creating. It follows both Carney’s Community and Fitzroy Lodge boxer’s journey in the sport.  Like the whole film industry, we thought our own production work had to stop. This included a new documentary that we have been filming.  Posh Boy captures the lives of young, aspiring boxers from London’s inner- city boroughs. It is a portrait of struggle and aspiration against the odds. But, this pandemic poses a serious challenge to the community at the heart of Posh Boy.  In these unusual circumstances, and to help this community under threat, we have decided to share some of our existing film material with you. We will then go on to capture this story through the testing weeks ahead, using whatever means our technologies make safely possible.

Covid-19 (Coronavirus) Update – 20 April 2020

Dear all, As the recent lockdown extension demonstrates, the situation with COVID-19 is ever moving and so we are continually risk assessing and trying to fit our work and responses to what the immediate needs and requirements are for our community.  This has sadly meant we have had to close the centre to the public and all staff are working from home, but rest assured, we are still supplying a service and support to our participants. In assessing the risk we are having daily updates on the national situation; following government guidelines on things like the lockdown and social isolation; holding weekly virtual meetings with partners; weekly team meetings and weekly management meetings to ensure we have all the correct up to date information and access to support for the participants that are most in need.  On a more personal level our coaches, key workers and mentors are all in […]
