FUNDRAISING IDEAS

TOM PUTMAN – BURPEE CHALLENGE

In May 2021, Tom Putnam attempted to set a new world record for the most burpees completed in 12 hours. He undertook the challenge as part of a fundraiser for several charitable causes including Carney’s Community. Tom’s inspiration came from a fundraiser he had taken part in the year before by doing 2,600 burpees in a day. However, to set a new world record, Tom would have to complete over 3 times as many burpees in 12 hours.

Incredibly, he succeeded in setting a new record and reached a total of 8,951 burpees, beating both the previous men’s record (7,295) and the overall world record (8,718). Tom’s efforts also raised over £4770 in donations half of which was donated to Carney’s Community. When asked about why he chose to fundraise for Carney’s, Tom said that “Carney’s Community is continuing to do its best to help make a real difference to young people right here in Battersea when they’ve needed it most”.

Everyone at Carney’s was amazed to hear about Tom’s endeavour and grateful that we were one of the charities he chose to support. The pandemic has brought new challenges to Carney’s, but with support like this we can carry on providing important services for those most in need.

“This past year has been like no other and the pandemic has literally been a matter of life and death for so many people around the world, as well as here in the UK, so I wanted to challenge myself with this ambitious attempt so I could raise support for two causes that have continued to be there for those in need throughout the coronavirus crisis”. – Tom Putnam

FRP BIKE DONATION

In addition to our boxing programmes, Carney’s Community runs a very popular bike workshop project called Battersea Bikes. At the workshop, a professional mechanic teaches participants all the skills they need to repair and maintain a bicycle. Battersea Bikes develops young mechanics by teaching them practical bike mechanic skills, as well as social skills such as communication and teamwork. By demonstrating the development of these skills, young people can earn a bike from the workshop that they might not otherwise be able to afford.

In September 2021, Carney’s received a donation of 17 brand new bikes from the financial advisory firm FRP. The donation took place at a FRP team building day. During the event, one of our young mechanics was invited to give a speech to the donors explaining how important the workshop is to the youth people involved; he then worked with FRP staff to help assemble the donated bike.

These donated bikes are a great boon to the work done by Battersea Bikes and have helped to attract even more interest in the project by giving us a large stock of bikes we can award to our dedicated participants.
