Musician Tinie Tempah came down to observe our boxing sessions and then did a session in our music studio, with participant Andrew and a select group of other participants. This came about following on from a presentation we did to Mercedes a couple of years ago. After that, they kindly linked us in with funders Laureus and then more recently, to arrange for a couple of their ambassadors to come down and visit our participants.

We got coverage in The Wandsworth Times for our bike workshops where we train 11-18 year olds to fix up unwanted bikes. The teenagers then get to keep the bikes or they are sold on with any profits re-invested into local youth projects. Our lead youth worker Rory said: Through our regular workshops, local young people get to work with mechanics to fix up abandoned or unwanted bikes. They learn useful practical skills and they get to keep the bikes which they would not otherwise be able to afford. Often these bikes are left on the streets in estates or outside train stations, and it’s thanks to the initiative taken by organisations like Positively Putney BID that they are removed off the streets and donated to a good cause.”

We need unwanted bikes for our youth initiative: Carney’s Cycles We are running more of our successful ‘fix a bike and keep it’ workshops and need bike donations for young people to fix up. The initiative continues, as part of a national campaign called #knivesdownbikesup.

From Monday 10th – Monday 17th June, we are aiming to raise £12,000 as part of the Summer Give.

We launched the adaptive boxing programme at the beginning of May.

Two of our amazing participants, Telisha and Shahab were recognised with awards at at the Wandsworth young person of the year award, for the great work they have been doing at Carney’s.

Carney’s Community is currently seeking an administrator to provide both clerical and administrative support to members of our team. This role will require someone who has good communication skills and the ability to deal with challenging individuals, whilst supporting the coordination and implementation of office procedures; where you will frequently have the sole responsibility for specific duties and tasks.   The role requires someone who is advanced in using Microsoft Excel, as you will be required to manipulate statistical data and formulate spreadsheets. Additionally, you will need to have good written and oral communication, word processing and typing, and requires relevant skills such as Excel, organisational and presentation skills with the ability to multi-task and work well under pressure.  Closing date for applications is 23 May 2019 at 1pm. The next AIM high event – showcasing young talent – will be on the 18th April at Caius House, Battersea. As ever, we will be involving all the young people with boxing fitness sessions at the event and some of our participants will also be performing live on stage, as the DJ project we have been hosting comes to its culmination.
