The Big Give

As a bike mechanic you will be part of the team at Carney’s community, supporting the running of the bike workshop and our social enterprise bike shop, Carney’s Cycles. We are looking for someone who has experience working or volunteering in bike mechanics. Ideally you will also have some experience of working or volunteering with young people aged 11-18.. Job Description: Youth Worker

As a youth worker you will be part of the team at Carney’s community, supporting the running of the youth boxing sessions and youth club. You don’t need any experience in boxing, but it is a bonus. We are, however, specifically looking for people with experience of working with & supporting young people aged 11-18. We may consider offering paid training in youth work as part of the role. Job Description: Community Chef

The purpose of the job is to lead the kitchen and our Fit and Fed project, to provide a healthy and nutritious meal to around 40 of our young people and staff after the boxing sessions. You will be the sole cook, planning, preparing, cooking and serving a hot meal twice a week, with occasional support from participant volunteers. The Community Chef will take a lead role in food safety and hygiene systems, ordering, collecting and managing stock, equipment, and the use of the kitchen. September Newsletter

Dear Community, We’ve had an amazing summer full of events, new projects, and exciting building upgrades. As we head into the next few months, we are focused on strengthening our community and creating more opportunities. Thank you for your continued support! On 26th July we launched “Carney’s Cycles” our newest social enterprise. Our Bike Workshop has been transformed into a shop open to the public every Saturday from 10am to 2pm. It is staffed by our trained young people and our qualified mechanics. Carney’s participants who complete our 5-week bike mechanics course can apply to be part of the Saturday shop as a “Junior Mechanic”. Giving each of them invaluable work experience and their first paid job. Big Give Fundraiser Coming Up!

Dear Community, It’s that time of year when we need your support! The Big Give Summer Campaign – Champions for Children – launches on 3rd June and we need your help. We’re trying to raise £30,000 for our project “Workshops for Real World Readiness”. Every donation made to our campaign via BigGive.org during the weeks of Tuesday 3rd June to Tuesday 17th June will be doubled! That’s right – DOUBLED. So whatever you can give, no matter the size, every donation will make double the difference in supporting us to deliver workshops that will make a real difference to the lives of young people. Carneys Newsletter – April 2025

The Wimbledon Foundation, the charitable arm of The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) and The Championships, has launched a striking photography exhibition celebrating remarkable people from the boroughs of Merton and Wandsworth. Champions of Merton and Wandsworth is a collection of 10 portraits by photographer Ben Queenborough celebrating 10 everyday heroes from the local community. The exhibition will be on public display at Southside Shopping Centre, Wandsworth from 7 to 21 April and in The Piazza, Wimbledon from 6 to 20 May. Wandsworth residents featured in the exhibition included our very own George Turner. George is the co-founder of Carney’s Community, a Battersea-based charity that since 2011 has helped thousands of young people living in Wandsworth and surrounding areas to turn their lives around through boxing and mentoring. Carney’s Newsletter – March 2025

On the 2nd March we held another Fitzroy Lodge Amateur Boxing Club open boxing show. We saw some great performances, including our very own Timothy, making his debut and winning with a second round stoppage. The boxing was so good, that it was covered in March’s Boxing News. Giz ran another girls only Boxers ToolKit over the half term, with a great turn out of the Carney’s young women. In partnership with Performance Plus and Inclusive Futures, we delivered another successful Gym instructor level 2 course, with all 9 attendees qualifying. Some will be joining us for paid work experience and others plan to go onto their personal training qualification. Cyprian was welcomed back to the Wimbledon Foundation, following his last appearance, as the person who did the coin toss for the men’s final last year. He got up and presented to 250 guests, at their annual reception. […]

Christmas Big Give

Dear Community, It’s that time of year again! Carney’s Community has been chosen to participate in The Big Give Christmas Campaign. With your help we can raise £20,000 for our Mentoring through Boxing Project. Donations to this campaign will enable our 6 days a week of free boxing sessions to continue, where through boxing our coaches teach discipline, perseverance and provide a safe space for young people facing challenges in their lives. Donations through The Big Give will be matched for 7 days from midday 3rd to 10th December.‘One donation, twice the impact.’What happens during the campaign?
