We are excited to welcome Michael Petiafo to our team as our new Lead Youth Worker, who brings a wealth of experience in supporting young people to thrive and reach their full potential. Please do come in and say hello!
After a busy Summer Holiday, we now have our regular participants attending the weekly boxing and youth club sessions, which have been as busy as ever!
We were all celebrating on 6th September when we watched participant, Marcus Perrineau Daley win a silver medal in the 100-metre wheelchair sprint, in his first ever Paralympics (being pipped at the post by the current world record holder). Marcus first came to Carney’s a few months after breaking his back in a motorbike accident. He immediately excelled in boxing and achieved his personal training qualification with us. We then introduced him to Paralympic superstar, David Weir, which led to him training with him and entering this year’s Paralympics. We fully believe that this is only the start for Marcus, as he is a force of nature and a massive role model!
A participant who was also our first community chef, sadly lost her long battle with cancer on the 29th of August, at only 50 years old. When we first opened Carney’s Community Centre in 2015, she not only helped us clear the centre and set it up as Carney’s, she also volunteered as our community chef & set up a tuck shop for the young people. She was always giving her time up for others and was a huge part of our community, who will be greatly missed! RIP Angie.
We sadly lost another participant to Knife crime on Sunday the 29th September. Damaris was only 24 years old and was fatally stabbed in the heart. He was a popular young man, whose family and friends are devastated. We have been supporting the family and his friend who was stabbed in the same incident, but fortunately survived after major open heart surgery. In the meantime, we do whatever we can to try and put a stop to knife and gun crime and all other forms of youth violence.
We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting another Fitzroy Lodge Amateur Boxing Club show, at Carneys Community Centre on Sunday 17th November.
Tickets will be sold at the door on the day, please come down for another great day of boxing!

During the Summer we funded a “Boxer’s Tool Kit” program for some of our young women who really benefited from the structured program that taught transferrable skills. We have since seen how much this has helped them progress and the feedback has been great. We will soon have a short film that we will be showing, highlighting the content and impact that the sessions had.
Did you know over half of the work of Carney’s is funded by individuals like yourself? Our latest annual accounts will be publicly available this month and incredibly it shows that 51%of our work last year was funded by donations. On the charts you can see the breakdown of where our income comes from and how it’s spent. We strive to be open about where our funding comes from and how we use it, so that you can be sure your donations are making the best impact on the young lives we support every day. If you’re interested in how best to support us, feel free to contact Hannah on: hannah.tulloch@carneyscommunity.org
We are looking to partner up with other likeminded organisations and businesses as we have observed that many of our participants face challenges in securing employment, primarily due to two factors: having a criminal record or Special Educational Needs (SEN). One of our main goals for 2024 is to advocate for improved access to employment opportunities for individuals in these groups. We are seeking businesses willing to provide meaningful work opportunities, who can recognise not only the financial benefits but also the positive social impact that such employment can create.
