The Secretary of State for Justice, Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP, heard about the work of Carney’s Community when he met George Turner and former CC participant Danny at an induction and training session for new Blue Sky recruits.
Blue Sky is an offender rehabilitation social enterprise. It wins commercial contracts from local authorities and private companies and fulfils the work by employing ex-offenders.
Danny was taken on by Blue Sky after a referral by George 9 months ago after being introduced by Dan Watkins, Parliamentary Spokesman for Tooting. Danny’s hard work was rewarded when he was promoted to team leader, managing a small team that worked at Wandsworth Cemetery, and following this success he is now doing an apprenticeship with another local employer.
Danny explained to the new recruits that he was in their shoes a little while ago. He told them how, having made the most of the chance, he has progressed to working in railway maintenance, with good future prospects.
