Carney’s participants Aaron Gilbert and Marcus Perrineau-Daley feature in a BBC Newsbeat piece about their experiences as disabled boxers.
The feature explains how boxing has changed their lives and highlights their frustration at being unable to compete in the sport. England Boxing says that there aren’t enough disabled boxers to fight with competitively.
The pair, both of whom have suffered serious spinal injuries through accidents, first met through boxing. Each is partially paralysed but that hasn’t stopped them training alongside non-disabled fighters.
They hope that one day they can take their rehab to a meaningful level, and fight someone in the same category as them.
Marcus has recently qualified as a gym instructor and is due to start running personal training sessions at Carney’s Community Centre from April.
