Carney’s Community coaches have been awarded the ‘Physical Activity Project of the Year’ award by Wandsworth Council in their Get Active award scheme.
The award recognises the hard work that Carney’s Community does in engaging some of the boroughs most disadvantaged residents in boxing fitness training.
The ceremony attendees heard from Carney’s Community participants who have been involved in the charity for a number of years, including some with disabilities and some ex-offenders. They told how, having been supported in overcoming many barriers, they themselves are now coaching the next generation.
The award citation also referred to the long term, consistent and unconditional mentoring support that Carney’s Community offers alongside the boxing fitness sessions. It also recognised the impact that most amateur boxing clubs have on their local community, such as Fitzroy Lodge ABC and Earlsfield Boxing Club.
